Why Uniforms?

We are often asked if we have a school uniform. Frequently, the question that follows is, “Why?” Below are a few of the reasons why TLC Prep has chosen to have uniforms for our students.

Character & Learning

  • Encourages distinctions on character and personality instead of appearance.
  • Places emphasis on learning, not clothing.
  • Reduces peer pressure and social stigmas.

Community & Safety

  • Allows for cohesive presentation as a group.
  • Facilitates security by identifying outsiders.
  • Enhances school spirit.

Practical Benefits

  • Simplifies dressing and dress code.
  • Equalizes economic diversity.
  • Lowers long-term clothing costs.

Uniform Code

All students are required to be in full uniform each school day. There will be special pre-announced non-uniform days throughout the year. It is strongly advised that every article of clothing be clearly and indelibly labeled with your child’s name. Information on where the uniform components can be purchased is available in the school office.

The principal is the final arbiter in interpreting standards for all students.
  • All students must be in full uniform compliance each day, except on days designated by the principal or classroom teacher.
  • When not in uniform, a student must present a written note from a parent explaining why the student is out of uniform. Repeated instances of non-compliance will result in a conference with the parent.
  • Uniforms must be of the appropriate size, length, fit, and in a proper state of repair. No visible rips or tears will be allowed.
  • No visible tattoos are permitted.
  • Excessive or faddish hairstyles for boys or girls are not permitted, including mohawks, ponytails on boys, shaved-in designs, and similar styles.

Appearance

Our uniform policy focuses students on being part of a team and emphasizes that what is on the inside is more important than what we wear. With that philosophy, students must wear accessories that are modest. Hair color and nail polish must be natural in color. Skirts and shorts will be of modest length.

In middle grades, personal hygiene becomes of major importance. Students who tend to perspire a great deal should keep deodorant in their backpacks to use as needed. Hair needs to look clean, well groomed, neat, and natural in color.

Jewelry

Non-functional jewelry, such as rings, necklaces, and earrings, is not to be worn at school or at school-sponsored functions. Students are requested to leave jewelry at home. If worn, the student will be asked to remove it. If it is not removed, jewelry may be taken from the student and returned at the end of the day.

Girls are allowed to wear one set of STUD EARRINGS ONLY.

Cold Weather

As far as possible, we have recess outdoors. During the winter months, we limit these days. When temperatures are below freezing, or there is a strong cold wind, we remain indoors. When temperatures are between freezing and 40 degrees, it will depend greatly on wind chill. Anything above 40 degrees, we try to be outdoors if at all possible.

Please be sure your child’s coat is warm enough for them and that they are wearing pants or, for girls, leggings or tights with a dress or skirt. You may also want to include a scarf and mittens.

Please remember to send umbrellas or raincoats on rainy Fridays, as students walk to the church for Chapel.
